About the Foundation
We support the recovery and recycling of aluminium beverage cans and other packaging in which aluminium is the dominant material. We pursue our goals by spreading knowledge about the possibilities of reusing all aluminium packaging and the environmental and economic benefits this brings. The Foundation for the Recovery of Aluminium Packaging RECAL has been operating continuously since 1995.
RECAL’s activities are supported by two domestic beverage can manufacturers: Ardagh Metal Beverage and CANPACK, as well as the European association of aluminium producers – European Aluminium – and of aluminium foil producers – European Aluminium Foil Association. A special place in RECAL’s work belongs to two leaders in the recovery of aluminium beverage cans: CANPACK Recycling Sp. z o.o. and Recan Metal Recycling sp. z o.o., both of which specialise in recycling aluminium beverage cans. On a project basis, we also cooperate with BAGPAK, a Polish beverage can manufacturer and one of the leading producers in Central and Eastern Europe. Over the last two years, as part of our paid statutory activities, we have carried out educational activities in cooperation with local government entities: the Municipality of Krokowa, the City of Sieradz, Krośnieńskie Przedsiębiorstwo Wodociągowo-Komunalne, Łużyckie Centrum Recyklingu in Marszów, Wielkopolskie Centrum Recyklingu in Jarocin, Zakład Unieszkodliwiania Odpadów Komunalnych „Orli Staw”, Zakład Utylizacji Odpadów in Elbląg and Zakład Zagospodarowania Odpadów in Poznań, as well as with the Silesian University of Technology and the companies Good Taste Production, Grupa Żywiec, Kompania Piwowarska, Krynica Vitamin and Żabka Polska. In addition, we ran the project „Sport for All and the Environment” („Environmentally sustainable Sport for All” – EnvInSport), co-financed by the European Union’s „Erasmus+ Sport” programme.
The RECAL Foundation and its activities have contributed to increasing the recycling rate of aluminium beverage cans in Poland from 2 percent in 1995 to 81 percent in 2023. The Foundation develops, shares and helps implement educational recycling programmes for educational institutions (schools, kindergartens), businesses (waste management companies) and local governments.
The RECAL Foundation was established on the initiative of beverage can manufacturers Continental Can Polska Sp. z o.o. (now Ardagh Metal Beverage) and PLM AB Malmö from Sweden, together with five aluminium producers: Alcan, Aluminium Company of America, Pechiney Rhenalu, Reynolds (Aluminium) Deutschland and VAW Aluminium.
